It's good to be the king
Even celebrities need a non-human best friend. From President Barack Obama to Adele to Paula Abdul, here's a few glimpses of the day in the life of a celebrity pet.
The first dog
President Barack Obama runs away from the family dog, Bo, during a brief break from meetings on the South Lawn of the White House on May 12, 2009. Bo is a Portuguese water dog, a breed that tends to be less allergenic than other breeds — a requirement for daughter Malia Obama, who suffers from allergies. Bo was a gift from the late Sen. Ted Kennedy who was also a fan of the breed. Below is a video of Bo's first day as America's first dog.
Paula Abdul's teacup posse
Paula Abdul cradles her three tiny dogs — Thumbellina, Tulip and Tinkerbell — at the sixth annual Paws for Style celebrity fashion show and charity auction on July 19, 2005. The "X Factor" judge has been recognized by the American Humane Association for her tireless work with the Pets and Women’s Shelters (PAWS) program. "The PAWS Program is acritical way of providing a transition for abused women and children into a safer and better life," according to Paula, the program's national spokeswoman.
Paris Hilton cuddles a small fluffy dog as she heads out to shop in Beverly Hills, Calif. The famous heiress and businesswoman is well-known for her affinity for small dogs, and she owns a grand total of 17 tiny canines. Her beloved Tinkerbell, a chihuahua, made headlines in 2004 when she went missing and sparked a nationwide dog-hunt. A $5,000 reward was offered and Tinkerbell was eventually found a week later. Tinkerbell has written a memoir called "The Tinkerbell Hilton Diaries: My Life Tailing Paris Hilton" and a toy manufacturer has sold plush replicas of the pampered pup.
While Paris is a fan of tiny dogs, her discomfort for animals of a larger variety (cows, goats, etc.) were on full display when she worked on a farm in "The Simple Life" reality show. We've been told no animals were harmed during filming of the show.
McConaughey and B.J.
Matthew McConaughey jogs on the beach with his dog, B.J., on a Sunday morning in Malibu, Calif.
The hunky actor has a soft spot for canines. He road-tripped across the country with his beloved mutt, Ms Hud, and discussed the experience with Oprah Winfrey in 2006. "She got diagnosed with cancer in Louisiana on the way east. We got her leg amputated on the way back ... and the night she got me back home, she fell off the bed and looked up and was like, 'Hey man ... I need a little help.' ... I took her to the hospital that morning and her hind legs were paralysed... The doctor said, 'We've amputated hind legs before but that's with dogs who have two front legs.' ... He and I looked at each other and I said, 'Ms Hud, do you wanna be a one-legged dog?' and she looks up and she says, 'Let me move on, Pop,' so we let her move on."
Pete Doherty and Jimmy
Pete Doherty, the troubled rocker from The Libertines and Babyshambles, pets his cat Jimmy and sips wine outside his home in Wiltshire, England, on May 6, 2008.
Doherty, who has spent time in rehab over the years, was once accused of giving crack cocaine to his pet cat Dinger in a widely publicized photograph that went viral. In addition, neighbors claimed to have seen the cat -- with bloodshot eyes -- "digging desperately" around the garden. The incident was a motivating factor in helping the rock star clean up his act.
British soul singer Adele walks her English bull dog on a sunny day on the streets of Tribeca, N.Y.
Adele, also the owner of a dachsund, once told People magazine that she almost named that dog after Britney Spears. "He was born on the night I went to see Britney Spears at the O2 in London," she told the magazine. "I almost called him Britney even though he was a boy. [But] it only lasted a few hours until my hangover stopped."
Susan and Penny
Actress Susan Sarandon holds her dog, Penny, at the "Live with Regis and Kelly" show in New York City. The pomeranian-maltese mix made a cameo on "Saturday Night Live" in a digital short with Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake called "3-Way." This was actually Penny's second appearance on the classic show. She appeared once before, also in a video with Samberg and Timberlake, in a short called "Motherlover." Somebody get this dog an agent!
America Ferrera and her 2 dogs
America Ferrera and a friend walk her two dogs at the Madison Square Park dog run during a break from filming "Ugly Betty" in New York City on Dec. 5, 2008. More recently, Ferrera has been trying to lead a greener life. "I'm big on composting. I’m hoping to build a garden once I get into my apartment that has a terrace,” she told MNN at the premiere of her movie How to Train a Dragon, who has found it easier to live greener since she moved to New York. “I walk and ride my bike more than getting in cabs or driving. Also, I’ve started eating locally and organically, going to the green market and supporting local farmers.”
Mariah and Jack
Mariah Carey and her best friend, Jack the Jack Russell terrier, do some shopping at Gucci in Beverly Hills, Calif. Mariah and husband Nick Cannon are also the proud parents of baby twins, Moroccan and Monroe. They muti-talented parents might want to take a look at our advice columnist's tip sheet for fun activities kids and dogs can enjoy together as well as advince on how to handle a dog whomay get jealous of new additions to the family.
The twins will appear for the first time on TV tonight (10/21) on a special "20/20" with Barbara Walters. A sneak peek is below:
Dog and his pack
Duane Chapman, better known as Dog the Bounty Hunter, walks along the beach in Malibu, Calif., with wife Beth and their small dog on Sept. 1, 2008. Dog (the bounty hunter, not the animal) also has a pet boar named Wilboar Chapman. Perhaps not surprisingly, the boar has his own Twitter page with more than 2,000 rabid followers.
Billy Ray Cyrus and his dogs
Singer and actor Billy Ray Cyrus takes his two dogs out for a walk around his neighborhood in Toluca Lake, Calif. The phot reminds us of Cyrus' classic 1993 song "Ain't Your Dog No More," whose opening lyrics are below:
I've been your hound
But now I'm breaking this chain
Too late to throw me a bone
I'm sick of fetching and sleeping in the rain
Ole Sparky's hittin' the road.
I won't be howlin' 'round your house
Won't be scratchin' your door
Won't be howlin' 'round your house
Ain't your dog no more.
David Price and Astro
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher David Price plays with his dog, Astro, prior to a baseball game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Seattle Mariners at Tropicana Field on Aug. 21, 2011. The team recently gave away miniature toy versions of Astro to fans and one special edition sat in the dugout with the team. That replica was actually stolen from the dugout, but was soon replaced by a bigger plastic dog courtesy of "Desperate Housewives" actress Eva Longoria. Seems like Astro has friends in high places.
Jessica Szohr and her pooch Watson
Jessica Szohr, who played Vanessa Abrams on the TV show "Gossip Girl," carries her small fluffy dog Watson around Brooklyn, N.Y. Szohr is also joining the gren bandwagon. "I take public transportation," she told MNN, adding that she also recycles, shops at farmers markets and takes a reusable bag to the grocery.
