Coconut Crabs: Nature is a Strange Thing - "Worst Thing"

So apparently this guy is a coconut crab. I did some research on them and it turns out they’re nature’s worst thing. Here’s a list of horrible facts about them: They are the largest land animals with exoskeletons growing up to 3 feet long and weighing up to 9 lbs. They live up to 30 years. They climb coconut trees, shake down the fruits, then use their claws to tear open the shells. When they’re young they use the shells of other animals like hermit crabs, but as adults they’re too big to fit in anyone’s shell.

They steal pots from humans and wear them as armor. Sometimes they’ll even use coconut husks as shells, as pictured below. They’ll also eat smaller crabs and have been known to eat rats.

The absolute worst thing about coconut crabs? They ate Amelia Earhart. It’s true! Recent discoveries suggest that coconut crabs ate her flesh and hoarded her bones in their crab burrows. Researchers hope that some of her remains can still be found in the crab burrows on Nikumaroro island, the desert island where she died. Below are some horrible pictures of these terrible things:

I wonder if they eat CACA?

But how do they taste?

They are delicious, with a mild sweetness reminiscent of the coconut diet they subsist on.

Never ate one that fed on rats...

They are really awesome. Living where not many animals live. Pretty beautiful too. Their claws are strong enough to break your wrist.

@the author of this article:

Are you retarded?
These crabs use the shells of hermit crabs??? Hermit crabs dont have any shells, thats why they are called hermit crabs...

I have eaten them (they are a delicacy in some Pacific Islands). They are delicious - so good that they are endangered. The person that posted this is entitled to their opinion, but they are a long way from being the worst thing around in nature.

They are super delicious and they don't eat rats, these crabs are so slow moving you can't imagine how it would feast on a speedy rat. Yes your opinion is yours but don't knock it til you try it.

actually ive always thought these guys where cool, as to eating humans, all crabs are scavangers, so, any crab could potentianaly eat someone, thats already dead, just as any animal would that eats meat, plus unless they had Earharts dna on record, if its just bones thers no way to tell who they where from, or if they ate them even, in any event, trust thers alot of animals alot more scary/dangerous out there, you need to read up about more animals, or not, if you react this way to any animal that deosnt only eat canned food and is fuzzy or something.

These crabs DID NOT eat Amelia Earhart...they never even found the lady.

They are beautiful to me. I won't have to worry about them, I don't eat crab or lobster. I do not belive they eat people unless they already dead. Frankly if I die in the wild I would not mind if aniamls ate me, that is why we call it the Circle Of Life.
